Since morning, we’ve been taking in the sights and sounds of the Russian capital, and some action-packed swimming has already been taking place. The silver medal-winning women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team was the first to dive in, later followed by the men’s 4x100m freestyle event. The biggest crowd of the Games so far has also gathered at the national stadium to watch the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay swim. The Russian team, consisting of Nataliya Ratkevich, Yuliya Chepkova, Yekaterina Smirnova, and Anastasiya Koshina, is the first team to swim the race with a new hand-off system, where the swimmers take turns leading the relay after each other. With this system, the swimmers should be able to swim much faster than they could before. The top three teams have already been determined, but none of the three teams know who they will face in the final. The race is very close, and the team will have to carry a lot of momentum into the final to get a medal.
